Review: Shiseido Senka Perfect Liquid

OMG! It feels so long ago the last time I reviewed on a skincare product. To be honest, I had previously drafted a few posts on skincare products but they always didn’t make it to the end. It was like I ran out of ideas to write in the middle of the blog entry. Hence, they never show up in this blog.

But anyways, I am back here today with a skincare product blog entry instead of the usual food or baking topics. This is probably the longest break that I took from baking. I couldn’t seem to summon the energy to bake after coming back home from work or even on a day off. But I am thinking of baking cookies since Chinese New Year is just around the corner. I intended to try baking this Cornflakes Cookies which I used to have at Jia‘s place back when I was still a kid but I wonder if she has the recipe.

Okay … Let us get back to business, shall we?

Shiseido Senka Perfect Liquid

If you had read about my previous blog entries, you would have known that I managed to get myself quite a haul on skincare products on my last Shanghai trip in September. I think I went rather crazy in getting skincare products back then and now I stopped on getting extras apart from my skincare necessities. I did not even buy any skincare product the last time I went Miri.

Senka range is actually the cheaper version of Shiseido. Shiseido Senka can be found in major Guardian across West Malaysia and maybe both Guardian and Watsons in Singapore. The first Shiseido Senka product which I got was from Guardian Malaysia, if I am not mistaken. I did not get it myself but a friend got it for me when he went KL few years back.

This product is a liquid based makeup remover and therefore it is not greasy like oil based makeup remover. The texture of this Shiseido Senka Perfect Liquid is like Shiseido AquaLabel Cleansing Liquid which I had reviewed few months ago. It has a thicker consistency compared to normal cleansing oils and it reeks of alcohol to me. You would not pick up the alcohol scent when pouring out the liquid but only when you are massaging the liquid on your skin.

I would say the product works well enough in terms of effectiveness. It cleanses my skin well without stripping skin moisture and leaving it smooth after rinsing off the liquid. I couldn’t vouch how well the product works on a heavily made up face though. I personally find liquid based makeup remover do not emulsify as much as oil based makeup remover.

So, here’s what I think of Shiseido Senka Perfect Liquid in a nutshell:

1. Cleanses skin well enough.
2. Leaving skin soft and smooth after rinsing off the liquid.
3. Doesn’t dry up the skin.

1. Reeks of alcohol.

Review: Peppermint Cafe, Brunei

The three of us – Mike (San Diann), Clara and I had dinner at Peppermint Cafe yesterday evening. Mike had invited both Clara and I for a meet up dinner on last Friday evening but I could not make as I had dinner arrangement with Kaylie. So, we postponed the dinner until yesterday evening. I had actually forgotten about the dinner meet up until Clara Whatsapp texted in our group message where would the dinner venue be this time round.

Seriously, I think I am starting to have short term memory as there were quite a few details which I could not seem to remember after a few days. But thank goodness that she reminded us the other day or else I would have gone straight home from work. I arrived late at Peppermint Cafe as I got out late from a meeting in the office. Took me around 25 minutes to reach as I missed the entrance and I had to make a U-Turn at the nearest U-Turn junction.

Clara was the first to arrive and she managed to grab us a table albeit the cafe was extremely packed at the time she arrived. Majority patrons had left at the time when I reached the cafe. Crowds started to get more eventually and we were the last to leave the cafe. The staffs were nice enough to let us stay for a while albeit it was past their business hour.

Anyways, pictures of Peppermint Cafe ahead! I will start with the decoration pictures followed by food pictures.

The cafe has a cozy ambiance. It is pretty spacious in my opinion and I like how they decorated the cafe. It has a great lighting which makes good food photography and selfies. LOL!

Look at how cute these mini Nutella and jam jars are! I wonder if they are for real or just fake miniatures. I think the jams were for real but maybe fake miniatures for the Nutella.

Food pictures ahead …

Double Shot Latte | B$4.50

This is actually a normal Cafe Latte but with an added shot of Espresso. When this was being served, the waiter kindly asked if I needed any sugar. I declined as I thought I will be fine with the bitterness. It was quite bitter when taken the first sip but the coffee gotten sweet eventually even without any sugar added.

My coffee with the coffee art of a cat. Clara made fun that the cat would have melted by the time I am done with the food photography. LOL! Well, I do not think it matters much anyways as the coffee art was not even that distinctive in the first place as the milk froth was not firmly done.

French Fries | B$4.00

The both of them ordered this to munch on while they were waiting for me to arrive. These fries turned out to be one of the best fries that I had eaten. They were a little crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. One word – perfecto!

Grilled Chicken with Mushroom Sauce | B$8.90

Mike and I ordered the same dish for dinner. This chicken dish comes with three kinds of gravy sauce to choose from – black pepper, mushroom and onion. I chose mushroom sauce gravy as I am not huge on black pepper sauce. And as for the side dish, you can choose one among french fries, boiled sweet potatoes or mashed potatoes. They were out of mashed potatoes yesterday evening, so I opted for french fries since I am not interested in boiled sweet potatoes.

The chicken was cooked to perfection. Bones had been removed so it was basically a boneless chicken thigh fillet. The mushroom sauce however was a little bit too salty for our liking. The coleslaw was however the Asian version. It was good and appetizing at the same time.

Pasta Carbonara | B$8.90

Clara choice of dinner. The portion was just right for her and it came with generous portion of beef bacon. The pasta looked good but unfortunately, I can’t eat beef. Perhaps I am gonna try requesting for a chicken version of Pasta Carbonara next time?

Verdict: I like the setting of the cafe, it was cozy and comfortable. Great venue for gatherings and great food too. However, the location is a little bit too far from where I live. I don’t mind returning again for their breakfast as I had seen multiple good reviews of their French Toast with Caramelized Sliced Bananas.

It took quite some time for the three of us to figure out the location. So, here is a heads up for those of you interested in trying out the cafe but did not know the whereabouts. The cafe is located in the same area as Starbucks Coffee in Beribi. It is on the same block as Courts Furniture and Isha Jaya. There is no signboard or banner of the cafe yet but you will find the cafe if you walk straight ahead from Courts Furniture. Next to Peppermint Cafe is Syarikat Kerthik.

25012015 / Coffee Zone, Gadong

Before I start with my today’s blog entry of my lunch at Coffee Zone, Gadong last Sunday, I wanna update on the fake Michael Kors wallet which I bought on behalf of the colleague of Sister. Jia Whatsapp texted me last Monday morning while I was at the Job Fair in BRIDEX. She told me that there is this website selling “authentic” Michael Kors products and they are having a huge price slash sale for about 17 hours. She asked me if I wanted to buy any as she is short of few tenners to reach free delivery quota.

Told Sister about the deal and she somehow managed to get one of her colleagues to join the fun. Her colleague placed an order for a wallet and Jia proceeded to check out with all the orders that she got. I told her not to wait for me first as I could not decide which bag to go for. Somehow, there is this uncertainty creeping up on me about the website. It is weird that they are offering such as huge price slash for authentic Michael Kors products.

So, I got curious and checked out the website FAQ section and there was a question about the authenticity of the products. They had been extremely honest and stated that they are “highest quality replica” from the same manufacturer of Michael Kors in China. I decided not to buy any when I saw the word “replica”. Told Sister about it so that she could inform her colleague that this is not a genuine Michael Kors product but first class imitation.

Anyways, the parcel arrived Jia yesterday and she Whatsapp texted me to collect. I went after work so that I can play with baby Lucas while he is still awake. Before Jia handed me the wallet which she ordered for Sister’s colleague, she informed that the quality was pretty terrible. The quality is nowhere near what was shown on the website. The website used the pictures of original Michael Kors products.

According to Jia, some of the products still looked a bit original from afar but looked definitely fake when taken a close look. But once you pull the external zip to reveal the inner look of the wallet, it will definitely come to you that this is a fake Michael Kors wallet. The website stated that they manufacture highest quality replica but this looked like a second class imitation to me as I had seen better imitation of Michael Kors than this.

Thank goodness that I did not buy any or else I will be so bummed when I see the products. Lesson learnt, never buy from other websites apart from the brand official website. If you are wondering which website this wallet came from, here is the link.

Okay … Enough on the ranting, let’s carry on with what I am supposed to blog about today.

After almost five hours of hair rebonding treatment at IA Salon, I went Coffee Zone, Gadong for late lunch. My original plan was to go Hot Point Restaurant for their Baked Seafood Rice but the restaurant was extremely crowded and the waiter just told me that the table was reserved as he was wiping the food excess when I approached the table and he did not even bother to find me another table. Kinda pissed with the customer service so I left.

American Fried Rice | B$7.50

Can’t think of what to eat so I ordered American Fried Rice with side dishes of two chicken wings and green salad. The fried rice was well done and cooked with sliced chicken frankfurters. But I did not like the frozen beans but beggar can’t be chooser, right? I was already starving at that point.

Not a fan of their chicken wings as they were deep fried to dry rather than perfection. The wings kinda shrunk in size and not juicy at all. I hate chicken wings fried without coated with flour batter.

Speaking of fried food, I am thinking of getting a Philips Airfryer. That way I can have fried food without having to worry about splattering hot oil. What do you think? Is it a value purchase?

Baking #67: Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins

I can’t believe that I stayed in a salon for half a day just for a hair rebonding treatment. I went IA Salon this time round as my hair was pretty damaged from the previous rebonding done at another salon. Don’t wanna reveal which salon here as what didn’t work for me doesn’t necessarily mean it won’t work on others too. Albeit the price at IA Salon was double or triple compared to what I had been paying previously but the outcome/result was a lot satisfying.

I used to go IA Salon for Frances when I was still working at The Mall but not so often anymore after I had relocated. Kaylie just had her hair colored few weeks ago prior to her wedding shooting. She had Frances too and paid B$120, which I find reasonable as she also paid almost the same amount for the same hair length at the previous salon.

I was 20 minutes late for my appointment as my breakfast came pretty slow at Cheezbox Cafe & Restaurant. I went IA Salon ten minutes before eleven in the morning and came out almost four in the afternoon for late lunch. LOL! But you will be served some light snacks in between the treatment.

Anyways, I will be updating about my latest baking attempt on Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins. I made them last Sunday but never gotten round to update them until today. Kinda been lazy in updating this blog of mine but I will try my best to update as much as possible especially on skincare products as I realized that I had been doing it less lately.

Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins (adapted from Minty’s Kitchen)

I had always wanted to make these but it is quite hard to find good blueberries nowadays. They are usually expensive and hard to maintain freshness. I got these blueberries as I intended to bake Blueberry Yogurt Muffins for my youngest aunt couple of weeks ago. But I couldn’t find any blueberry yogurt when I needed it. So, I made do with buttermilk instead.

But my muffins were a disappointment in terms of the appearance. They looked holey on the top whereas the ones from Minty’s Kitchen looked very smooth. Taste wise, they were good and moist. These muffins were less sinful as they were made out of vegetable oil instead of butter.

A close up look of my Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins!

  • 325g plain flour
  • 150g caster sugar *100g*
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 125g fresh blueberries
  • zest of one orange *omitted*
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 120ml canola oil *corn oil*
  • 1 tsp vanilla essence

  1. Mix together plain flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt. Gently fold in fresh blueberries and set aside.
  2. In a clean bowl, whisk together orange zest, egg, buttermilk, corn oil and vanilla essence.
  3. Make a hole in the centre of the flour mixture and pour in the wet ingredients and stir until the ingredients were well combined but not overmix.
  4. Using an ice-cream scoop, fill each cupcake liners almost full with batter.
  5. Bake them in a preheated oven of 180 degree Celsius for 180 degree Celsius for 20 to 25 minutes or until inserted cake tester comes out clean in the centre of a muffin.
  6. Leave the muffins in the muffin tray for about 10 minutes before removing them for cooling on a wire rack.

This was how my Buttermilk Blueberry Muffins looked on the inside when taken a bite. The blueberries softened under the extreme heat when baked in the oven. The sweetness level of the muffins were just right as I had reduced the sugar quantity. The muffins were soft and moist in my opinion but Mom said they were too dry for her liking. Perhaps I should try using cake flour instead of plain flour next time.

I baked these muffins at 190 degree Celsius for the second batch as the muffins did not brown even after 20 minutes into baking with 180 degree Celsius. So, do adjust the temperature accordingly when you bake them.

23012015 / Cheezbox Cafe & Restaurant

So, Kaylie and I met up for dinner yesterday evening as I wanted to buy a pair of black shoes from SUMMIT. Unfortunately, the shoe size which I wanted was already out of stock. Albeit I did not manage to get any shoe yesterday, it was still a productive shopping trip.

I got myself 7 packets of The Body Shop Organic Cotton Pad as I needed to renew my membership. Free membership renewal will be given when your purchase exceeded B$40 in a single receipt. So, I used up the B$40 with 6 packets of their cotton pads and got another packet at 30% off. I think the SA jaw dropped when I told her I wanted 7 packets of their cotton pads. I am probably one of the odd customers who buy so much cotton pads at a time.

And I managed to secure an appointment at IA Salon with Frances for hair rebonding tomorrow morning. But I think they had changed ownership as the shop is no longer named as IA Salon anymore. It is something like Angeline Beauty House.

Dinner yesterday was at Cheezbox Cafe & Restaurant as Kaylie was craving for their baked rice. The last time I went Cheezbox was the time when I was meeting a friend to pass some money after Jia‘s wedding dinner in June.

Chicken Lasagna | B$9.90

It had been a while since I had the Chicken Lasagna at Cheezbox. It is by far one of the best Chicken Lasagna which I had tried so far. The pasta was well done and the portion of cheese was just perfect. The chicken sauce was however a little sweet for me though. But all in all, this was a satisfying Chicken Lasagna.
