29122015 / Kaizen Sushi Waterfront

The family and I had dinner at Kaizen Sushi Waterfront yesterday evening as an advanced celebration of parents’ birthdays. We intended to go Chempaka Kitchen as parents liked local Chinese cuisine more than any other cuisine. Dad particularly likes the food there as it tasted more like home cooked food. But unfortunately, Chempaka Kitchen is closed until 3rd January 2016.

So, we settled with Kaizen Sushi Waterfront in the end as Sister had been asking for Kaizen Sushi. Thought parents might not want to go Kaizen Sushi as Mom ain’t a huge fan of Japanese cuisine. Surprisingly, she agreed. Probably because Sister begged for it. LOL! *just kidding*

We had quite a feast yesterday. It has been a long time since I had so much food just for dinner. Well, I still control my food intake. I think I had gained 1.5 kilos in within one week time since Sister came home from Shanghai. Gosh! I wonder how am I going to keep up with my weight during Chinese New Year in Bangkok.

Spicy Maguro Temaki (Sake) | B$3.60

My all time favorite hand roll from Kaizen Sushi. You could choose in between salmon or tuna. I chose the former. I always prefer salmon over tuna when it comes to raw but tuna for cooked.

Satsumaimo Tempura | B$4.50

Had wanted to order Moriawase Tempura but went ahead with this instead. Super love the soft and sweet Japanese Sweet Potatoes. Mom did not like it as much as I did though as she find the batter too thick.

For Dad. Came with a super generous portion of Vegetable Tempura, Ebi Tempura, Sake Sashimi and Grilled Eel with rice. Did not try the Grilled Eel but Sister said it was good. The Grilled Eel was cooked to perfection. Soft and smooth, which practically melt on your tongue.

Chawan Mushi | B$2.70

This was Sister’s. She ordered this as she had just undergone a surgery on her wisdom tooth. So, soft food like Chawan Mushi is the best food for her.

Sashimi (Sake) | B$12.60

Thick slices of sashimi but not juicy and fattening enough as these weren’t the salmon belly. But still good enough though but I think it was better previously.

Agedashi Tofu | B$4.50

I think the Agedashi Tofu kinda shrunk in size. I think it used to be bigger in size than these. Soft and smooth, hence they broke apart when picking them up with a pair of chopsticks.

Softshell Furaidon | B$6.30

Deep fried soft shell crab in breadcrumbs for Mom. I did not have a lot of this but only a small piece of the shell. It was actually quite good but not something which I would want to order for myself next time.

Ordered a set of these which was good for 2 to 3 persons. I liked the Salmon Maki but didn’t get to try the Unagi Sushi though.

This sums up my dinner at Kaizen Sushi Waterfront yesterday evening. I did not have much as I felt quite full halfway through dinner. Looks like my appetite shrunk in size along with my body size. But I had quite a few pieces of the Satsumaimo Tempura though. LOL!

20122015 / Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

So … I had my snack treat at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on my own after having breakfast with Clara and San Diann at Ah Tong. Well, I did not exactly had my snack treat right after breakfast but some time around noon before I meet up with another two friends.

I was craving for some cakes and coffee at that time and my best option was Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf although Secret Recipe was just nearby. I don’t feel like having cream cake. So, CBTL it was and ordered Red Velvet Hot Cocoa and Brownie Cheesecake.

Red Velvet Hot Cocoa | B$6 & Brownie Cheesecake | B$5.50

It’s Christmas season and CBTL returned with their seasonal beverages. Instead of getting a caffeinated drink, I ordered Red Velvet Hot Cocoa. A bit contradicting when I just mentioned that I was craving for coffee. LOL!

Regretted ordering Red Velvet Hot Cocoa as it was not my cup of tea afterall. Rather sweet albeit I had requested less sugar syrup and it had a strong taste of milk than cocoa. All in all, I only managed to finish a quarter cup of the beverage. I should have stick with my usual Cafe Latte.

Of all the cake selections at CBTL, I liked Brownie Cheesecake the most. It was sweet but still tolerable if I omitted the crumb topping. The cake came with a base layer of brownie, followed by a thick layer of cheesecake topped with confectioner sugar dusted crumble toppings.

Review: Ah Tong

San Diann, Clara and I met up for an early breakfast last Sunday morning. San Diann invited both Clara and I to try out this newly opened Ah Tong couple of weeks ago on the day of soft opening but I could not make it as I got a last minute work call. So, we took a rain check and met up last Sunday instead.

We met at 9:00a.m. in the morning. Early, huh? I was surprised that both of them were okay with meeting so early as majority of my friends could not make it for breakfast before 10:00a.m. in the morning. I like going out early in the morning so that I can get things done earlier. There was once I met up with my colleagues for breakfast before 8:00a.m. on a Sunday morning couple of months ago.

Without further ado, let me show you what I had at Ah Tong last Sunday morning.

鱼滑 Efu | B$5

It took me a long time to decide what to have for breakfast. I wanted to try Salmon but I think it was kinda heavy and expensive for breakfast. So, I settled with the most basic one –  鱼滑. I was shocked when I saw the size of bowl presented in front of me during serving.

My bowl of 鱼滑 came with generous portion of deep fried homemade fish cakes, deep fried tofu, salted vegetables and tomatoes. As for the noodle, you could choose in between yellow noodle or rice vermicelli. I chose the latter. As for the soup, you could choose between clear or milky base. The waitress highly recommended us the milky base as it was their chef’s specialty.

The soup was good in my opinion but I’ll like it more if it is more sour than it is now. The homemade fish cakes were good! It was soft, smooth and silky. Deep fried tofu was good too but tasted a bit sourish to me, probably due to the soup base. Rice vermicelli portion was more than generous, which I only managed to finish half.

All in all, I think this was a good bowl of 鱼滑 and I do not mind returning next time. I think I will bring my family to try next time. Additionally, Ah Tong also serves freshly baked buns like Buttermilk, Red Bean, Sausage Rolls and Egg Tarts in the morning. Buns are sold at B$0.50 while egg tarts are B$0.80 each.

Baking #88: Blueberries Yogurt Pound Cake

Good morning! Did baking yesterday evening as I intended to finish off one of the bags of frozen blueberries which I bought previously. I still have another bag left, think I am gonna use them for Blueberry Crumble Muffins or Blueberry Crumb Cake soon.

Instead of baking Mixed Berries Yogurt Pound Cake, I used the same recipe by DessertzHouse and baked Blueberries Yogurt Pound Cake. Instead of a 22cm loaf pan, I used a 20cm one. So, it made my cake looked taller and bigger in size. I think I am gonna use a 24cm loaf pan next time so that the cake will bake more evenly.

Without further ado, let me show you how this Blueberries Yogurt Pound Cake was made!

Ingredients:

  • 160g unsalted butter, softened
  • 200g fine granulated white sugar *130g*
  • 4 eggs
  • 130g natural plain yogurt *low fat yogurt*
  • 200g cake flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 140g frozen mixed berries *188g frozen blueberries*

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix both cake flour and baking powder together. Sift and set aside.
  2. In another mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add in eggs one at a time to avoid curdling.
  4. Add in half of the flour mixture and beat on low speed, followed by yogurt and the remaining half portion of flour mixture. Mix until well combined and be careful not to over mix the batter.
  5. Gently fold in the frozen blueberries into the batter.
  6. Pour batter into a greased and lined 20cm loaf pan and bake in a preheated oven of 180 degree Celsius for 55 to 60 minutes or until an inserted cake tester comes out clean
  7. Leave the cake to cool in the baking pan before dislodging.

I did not wait until the cake to be fully cooled down before dislodging so the cake was still fragile when I tried to slice it up. The cake was a little bit wet and moist when it was still warm but turned slightly more compact the next morning when it had cooled down.

I think I am gonna stick with 140g of frozen blueberries the next time I am attempting this recipe again as 188g seems like a lot to me. It kinda made the cake rather wet at the bottom of the cake. Mom did mentioned that the sweetness of the cake was just right. Buttery taste was alright for me but may be a bit strong for those who do not like buttery cakes.

Review: Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip Foam Cleanser

It has been a while since I last did on skincare review apart from the sponsored review of Klarity products. Anyways, Shiseido Senka products have been in the market for quite some time already and I have yet tried all of their “Perfect” range.

I got this Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip Foam Cleanser through Sasa online and have it delivered to Sister’s place in Nanjing in September last year. When I was in Miri earlier this month, I found out that Watsons also carries a couple of Shiseido Senka products. So, you can now get Shiseido Senka products nearby instead of having to buy it online or maybe fly over to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur for it.

Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip Foam Cleanser

Before I even bought this product from Sasa, I came across a few positive blog reviews of the product. A lot claimed that this product has a good foaming ability, which I admit is true based on my own personal experience.

To be honest, I am not at all hardworking when it comes to lather the product into a thick foam before spreading them onto my face. I will just use a little bit of water and gently massage them on my hands until it started to form into  a mousse alike texture before applying them onto my face. I just couldn’t be bothered with the tedious process.

Product texture is smooth and creamy and it comes in a pearly white color. It has a mild pleasant scent and doesn’t linger on the skin after washing it off with water. For the first few usages, I could feel the my skin slightly tighten after each wash but it got better eventually. My skin is now soft and smooth after each wash and it took off the residues left on my skin after cleansing oil/water well enough.

To be honest, I don’t find this facial cleanser any better than some of the other inexpensive drugstore facial cleansers which I had previously used. It cleanses the skin well enough but not something which I would go “wow” over.

So, here’s what I think of Shiseido Senka Perfect Whip Foam Cleanser in a nutshell:

Pros:
1. Mild pleasant scent
2. Good foaming ability
3. Cleanses skin well enough
4. Doesn’t cause breakout

Cons:
1. Can feel skin tightened on the first few washes
