28072017 / Alter Ego

San Diann, Clara and I met for dinner yesterday evening as I needed to pass over the duty free skincare products which Clara requested me to get from Singapore Changi Airport earlier this month. We intended to try out the newly established Food Messenger located in Gadong but their business hour is only until 7PM.

Alter Ego has recently came up with a new menu. They had already launched the new menu on my previous visit before yesterday evening. I tried their Black Sheep previously. It was good but lacking the wow factor. Both Clara and San Diann were keen to try Alter Ego as they both had never been to.

One of their latest improvements apart from the menu upgrade is this. You will be given a menu booklet along with an iPad so that you would know how your food would look like physically before ordering. I like the idea as patrons can know what they are expecting from their food. Alter Ego has also launched two 3-courses set meals at B$20 and B$26 respectively. Both came with a starter plate, main course, dessert and coffee or tea.

Both Clara and San Diann realized that their 3-courses set meal seems more economical after we placed our orders. They inquired if it was possible to change to set meal instead of ala carte. Unfortunately, the waitress informed us that it will not be possible as our orders had been placed into their system.

Karage Chicken | B$7.50

fried spiced chicken and smoked tomato sauce

The fried chicken was average to me but both San Diann and I liked the dipping sauce. It was a mixture of BBQ and tomato sauce with a spicy kick. The dipping sauce can be pretty addictive and I am sure it will pair well with fries too!

Mushroom Carbonara | B$11

thin spaghetti sauteed with shimeji mushrooms, Béchamel sauce, egg yolk, freshly grated parmesan

Salmon Confit | B$10.50

Norwegian salmon, chives, kombu, apple & fennel tossed in lemon vinaigrette, alfalfa sprouts

Sakura Ebi Pasta | B$9.50

thin spaghetti, chili oil, finely chopped kombu, chives, sakura ebi

This was what I had for dinner yesterday evening. There was nothing much which caught my fancy yesterday evening apart from this. I was intrigued as to know how Sakura Ebi tastes like. If you are wondering if it taste anything close to sakura (not that I smelled sakura before), no it did not. Sakura Ebi is actually the tiny shrimps and they had been deep fried before serving.

The pasta was generously topped with Sakura Ebi. To be honest, I could not appreciate the taste at first but it slowly started to sink in when I could taste the slight spiciness. To be honest, I did not find much special in this pasta dish. However, I do have to admit that the Sakura Ebi added texture to the thin spaghetti. It was a good pasta dish but it did not win me over to return for a second serving.
