Skincare Buys #8

Just realized that I had been doing food blog entries recently when I was going through my blog archives a while ago. So, here I am with a skincare blog entry. It has been more than two weeks since I came home from my Tokyo and Shanghai holiday. And of course, I came home with quite a haul for skincare products. Didn’t go crazy with skincare products’ while in Tokyo but in Shanghai insted.

Without further ado, let me show you what I had gotten myself on my holiday. I bought more makeup removers as I like to go for varieties and I am more of a stickler for toners and moisturizers.

This basically summed up three quarter of my skincare loots from Shanghai and Tokyo. I still have a few more items but I think I will cover them some other time. I am now regretting not getting the Kose Esprique Eyebrow Pencil from Tokyo as the one that I am using now is running low.

Went to The Mall this evening after work as I needed to sort out some banks’ errands. Unfortunately, I only managed to get one sorted as the other bank declined my application. Three officers working for the same bank gave me three different sets of answers for one application. This was already my second trip to the bank!

I was so pissed off at the moment and felt the urge to lodge a complaint for inconsistency of protocols among branches. Anyways, not going to dwell anymore as I resorted to having my bank application sorted at another bank instead. Why stick to the bank when they had given you hell of a service, right?

Dinner tonight was at Rack & Brew Boutique Cafe as I wanted to eat something light. The tummy hasn’t been feeling great since morning. There was symptom of mild bloating. I think it was the excessive gluten intake recently which caused the mild bloating.  So, I had salad for dinner.

with sliced chicken, parmesan cheese, bread crumbs and an in-house made dressing

I had previously tried their Breaded Chicken Salad and it was nice. I did not feel like having the same thing again so opted for this Chicken Caesar Salad but requested for no parmesan cheese. The in-house made dressing was pretty good but too oily for my liking.

11102016 / Chempaka Kitchen

So, the gang – San Diann, Clara and I met up for dinner yesterday evening at Chempaka Kitchen. Shew Hiang was supposedly joining us but she cancelled hours before as she feared that her son might be too handful to be handled during dinner. Both Clara and I parked our cars nearby and we went with San Diann’s car as he knew the whereabouts. I had been to Chempaka Kitchen a handful of times but I had never paid attention to the location’s details.

We ordered everything in small portion so that we will have tummy space for desserts later on. Without further ado, let me show you what we had for dinner yesterday.

dsc03269

Deep Fried Salted Egg Chicken

You can choose between chicken and pork. They used ribs for pork though. We all loved this as the chicken parts were all well coated with the salted egg yolks. Best of all, the meat was all juicy and tender. And the skin was crispy too. Ever since I started dieting, I usually avoid chicken skin but this was too good to miss.

dsc03276

Braised Pork Belly

We had this with steamed buns and it was superb. The pork belly was well braised and the meat was soft and tender. The gravy goes well with the rice too!

Stir Fry Baby Kailan

dsc03278

Lotus Soup

dsc03280

Watercress Soup

Verdict: The total bill for yesterday’s dinner was B$29.50. It was not bad given the amount of food that we ordered albeit everything was in the smallest portion. Guess this might be our frequently visiting place for Chinese cuisine next time? LOL!

Review: The Dorchester Afternoon Tea, The Empire Hotel & Country Club

The Dorchester Afternoon Tea is now back again at The Empire Hotel & Country Club with a variety of teas and pastries flown in from the UK. I got to try it out yesterday afternoon with Jennifer. To be honest, I had never heard about The Dorchester Afternoon Tea until she asked me if I would like to join her to try it out and I agreed.

The Dorchester Afternoon Tea will be available from 1st October 2016 until 23rd October 2016. It starts from 2PM to 6PM everyday. Price per person will be B$25 and subject to an additional 10% service charge. Jennifer called in days before to reserve a table for two at 2:30PM for yesterday. I arrived 20 minutes earlier as it takes like 45 minutes for me to reach. However, it only took me 30 minutes as there was no traffic congestion on the way.

dsc03249

Had too much time to spare while waiting for Jennifer to arrive. Sat nearby the lobby and started my Korean drama series marathon. Just realized that my spectacle seems rather big for my face in the picture. LOL!

After confirming our reservation with the waiting staff, we were being escorted to a table which overlooks a partial view of the scenery outside. We were being given menus to choose what we would like to drink. Jennifer had their popular Dorchester Blend while I had their Dragon Pearl Jasmine. It was good! I am not much of a tea person but this Dragon Pearl Jasmine was good.

dsc03251

If you are not much of a tea drinker, you can opt for coffees but they are not flown in from UK though. It will be the usual coffees which Lobby Lounge serves. Apart from coffees or teas, they are also serving “fake” bubbly. In UK, you can have champagne. As alcohol is forbidden in Brunei, they serve sparkling white grape juice instead and it was nice. Even better when drank chilled.

dsc03253

Shortly after we placed our orders for beverages, a cart filled with assorted pastries and sandwiches was strolling our way and we were being served with these! Top tier was assorted cakes, second tier was scones and the third tier was assorted finger sandwiches. Both Jennifer and I loved the second and third tier the most. LOL!

dsc03254

Assorted finger sandwiches consisted of egg mayonnaise, chicken with basil mayonnaise, smoked salmon with dill, cucumber with cream cheese and tuna with sweet corn. I loved the egg mayonnaise and chicken with basil mayonnaise the most. Smoked salmon with dill was not bad but I find the smoked salmon too salty for my liking. And the bread were extremely soft!

dsc03255

The cake selection! We did not have much of this but I did try the white cake thingy. I don’t know what it was but there was lemon curd inside as filling. The sourness from the filling neutralize the sweetness from the outside.

dsc03258

We were being served four scones. I had one plain and one golden raisins filled. Both were good but I preferred the one with golden raisins. I like anything with raisins anyways. We were impressed that the scones stayed soft and fluffy even though it had been there for quite some time. The scones were served covered in a piece of napkin to preserve the freshness.

The clotted cream was simply superb. It was even better than the one I had at Table No-1 by Jason Atherton. The strawberry jam was nice too. The texture was runny and it was not sweet. The sweetness was well balanced. Simply finger licking good! I did not have any of the butter cake but according to Jennifer, it tasted lemony. I guess British likes zesty desserts? Even the butter was lemony in taste.

Verdict: To be honest, I did not have much expectation prior to trying out this Dorchester Afternoon Tea as I had never been to one and I did not know what to expect. According to Jennifer, it costs approximately £40 per person in the UK and you need an extremely advanced booking to secure a table.

Food wise, I was more than impressed. Customer service was even better. They have staff members coming to you to ask if you need any refill once in a while. For your information, everything is unlimited refill but we only requested refill for their finger sandwiches. Scones were good but we were too bloated to stuff overselves with more scones.

07102016 / Flour & Butter Cafe

It was my birthday yesterday. Birthday is not something which excites me anymore after I reached a certain age. As you grow older, birthday is just like any other ordinary day. I came home to pick Mom after work for clinic visit as she wanted to have her medical report reviewed by the doctor. And I wanted to have my sore throat problem seen. It sounds like bad omen to see the doctor on your birthday. LOL!

After we were done at the clinic and did some grocery shopping, we headed to Flour & Butter Cafe as I feel like having a cake on my birthday and I needed my caffeine fix too! The place was crowded as compared to the other days when I was there. I see that they are trying to add new dishes into their menu. They have this Coffee Fries which I have yet try. Perhaps next time when my throat is better?

Mocha | B$5.50

Mom is not a caffeine person at night. She once had Latte at Seesaw Coffee while in Shanghai around 6PM and she ended up being wide awake throughout the night. I thought Mocha would be a better option as the percentage of caffeine is not as high as Latte. But she declined and I ended up having it all to myself.

Chocolate sponged cake sandwiched in between layers of whipped cream, cherries and peanut butter. Surprisingly, the combination was good and they complimented each other well.
